6/4/2009 - WTC Steel Pictures

This morning I received word from Peter Miller from the Port Authority NY/NJ that C-40, the original WTC Steel we selected on April 27th is being processed for Westerville. Good news.

This is a very significant piece as it was located on one of the floors impacted by American Airlines Flight 11 into WTC Tower 1 at 0845 on 9/11. One of the very few pieces recovered/identified from the north face, it spanned the 98-101 floors. The plane struck between the 94th thru 99th floors and is documented in the NIST official investigation report. We are going to have a very significant piece that will be used to educate generations for years to come.

As of today Peter is unable to give me any indication when we can pick it up. The attorney drafting the legal documents was hit by a taxi in NY several weeks ago and had missed 2 meetings in regard to our steel. He was to be back Monday.

Shipping has been secured with Hyperlogistics and I am working with Sutphen Corp. to clear coat the steel once received. The crane to load the steel in Gaithersburg has yet to be secured. Structural Engineers, Shelley, Metz, Bauman & Hawk Inc. out of Dublin has agreed to help us mount and secure the steel once here. Ken Siegfried, a Westerville High School classmate is an engineer there. The connection, his father was Assistant Fire Chief Harry Siegfried here in the 1960’s and fell through the roof at the Wilkin Ford Auto Dealership on East Main St., fire…..and survived.(now Westerville Automotive).

On Memorial Day Weekend, 2009, a spectacular visual display of 1,500 American Flags will be displayed across from the Westerville Community Center on Cleveland Avenue in Westerville, Ohio. These 3' x 5' flags will stand 8 feet tall in perfect rows and columns across a field of green.

The Rotary Club of Westerville Sunrise Field of Heroes is being held to honor our personal heroes - whoever they are to you... a family member, a friend, a veteran, a member of the armed services, your favorite teacher, a policeman or fireman.

Show support for your hero. Become a part of this community event by purchasing a flag that will stand proudly in the Field of Heroes. After the Memorial weekend the flag is yours to keep. Flags can be ordered here http://www.fieldofheroes.org/index.html. This is an opportunity for us all to come together as a community to remember, to honor, and to heal.

If you go to purchase flag http://www.fieldofheroes.org/purchase.html you will have a choice of local organizations that portions of the proceeds will go to. I would ask that you select the Westerville Fire Fighters' Memorial, but all the organizations are worthy of our support.

This is also the same day (May 23) as the Westerville Fire Fighters' Memorial Bike Tour. www.wffmemorial.org
